Are you a tattler, a busybody, a gossiper?

How many times a day do you have to talk about someone behind their back to be officially labeled a gossiper?

Today I decided to see how many times I got involved in gossiping. I counted the number of times I initiated gossip and the number of times someone else did while speaking with me. This does not include general gossip around the office. You can tell there are gossiping sessions are starting when all of a sudden you hear people whispering. Everyone is speaking loud and clear when suddenly they start whispering and after a while normal tone of voice resumes. Actually my experiment today was quite a shock.

Me: 16 times

Others while speaking to me: 23

Keep in mind this is just one day and I probably missed a few times. Sometimes when you are speaking with someone it is hard to keep track of where gossip about one person stops and about another begins.

This is part five of the series on gossiping:

  1. Gossip: Can’t live with it and can’t live without it
  2. Why do people gossip?
  3. Advantages of gossiping
  4. Downside of gossiping
  5. Are you a tattler, a busybody, a gossiper?
