Why do I get sick every month?

Eat right, exercise regularly, die anyway.” – Unknown author

What if you are an ambitious person? What if you have learned to motivate yourself? What if you are a goal oriented person? What if you are getting your life back on track? What if you have started earning a decent income? What if your credit rating is improving? What if your debt is finally being paid off? And what if you do not even gossip anymore?

Then you realize that something somewhere is missing. You set more goals, improve some areas of your life and yet a little voice inside your head keeping nagging you. To make sure you discipline yourself you try to be more efficient, you manage time better, you get more work done.

Then you get sick! You ignore it and hoping that if you just work through it, it’ll just go away. That’s not the case. It gets worse. You finally decide to take one day off of work to rest and get better. Now you’re better and you are back on track.

Instead of taking that as a warning you go at full speed again and the same cycle repeats next month.

That’s been the story of my life for the past six months or so. I started noticing that every single month I was getting sick. I even started doing cardio every single morning but the next month I got sick again. I finally started taking vitamin C but again I got sick. I am eating almost 100% diet consisting of organic foods. So, what is the problem?!!

It is not that I mind getting sick. It’s just that it slows me down quite a bit. Also, I am on a contract so I get paid for the time I am at work. If I have to take a day off at work, either I lose the pay for that month or make up that time.

Finally I started taking one a day multi-vitamin and vitamin C. This month again I felt the fever coming on but I was able to fight it and I did not need to take a day off work. :-) So, I think the combination of multi-vitamins and vitamin C is doing the trick.

Granted that I sometimes skip breakfast but overall I am still eating at least 3 meals a day. I have come to the conclusion that even though diet plays a major role in keeping you healthy, it’s not the only thing. I think your state of mind plays an even bigger role. If you are not unconditionally happy then your health suffer regardless of how good your diet is.

Preserving the health by too strict a regimen is a wearisome malady.” – François Duc de la Rochefoucauld

I think I have been a little too strict with my diet. I have been eating a diet of the foods that I do not actually enjoy. I never really look forward to any meal. I am just having meals because it’s what I should be doing and I get hungry. I am going to start having more of the things that I actually enjoy. I do not eat unhealthy anyways so I think I do not have to worry about getting fat etc.

It’s not just that I am eating really healthy food that I do not enjoy it’s also the poverty consciousness. When I did not have enough money I would buy foods that were the cheapest regardless of what happened to my health. I would look for the special deals and the cheapest deals were always at McDonalds, Wendy’s, Taco Bell and so on. If I was at a coffee shop I would just get the tea because it was cheaper than coffee and also drinking tea killed the appetite so I did not need to buy food. All of this ruined my health as well.

That is actually exciting! I seem to have found the cause of my bad health. I am going to have food that I really enjoy regardless of the cost. If I really feel like having something then I am going to have it. I get really excited when I set new goals. So, I am going to set some new and different goals now. Looks like another 30 day challenge is coming up. :-) I will keep you posted.

    Hi Alysa,
Sorry for the late reply but haven’t been keeping up with my blog or the past little while. It is not normal for us to get sick, whether it’s just runny nose or little aches here and there. If you get a chance, do read a book by Louise Hay “You can heal your body”. It’s an amazing book!
She actually has descriptions about every single ache, pains, disease etc and emotional reason why it is like that. Then she gives affirmations to cure that. She has helped millions of people around the world with her guidance so you may also find that helpful.
It’s very important for us to find the cause and not just take medicine to treat the symptons.
She actually had cancer as well and she cured her cancer and she talks about it in her book. Wishing you all the best.

I get sick when I am over stressed at work.

I can imagine how you would get sick every month when you are worried about money. Our conception of health and wealth are closely tied together…..

  4. Ricky Says:

Definitely! Money seems to be the most important thing in most people’s lives. Our whole life, our identity, our success is tied to money. So, when money problems come, along comes our old friend “stress”! :-) And as we all know stress is responsible for more health problems than probably anything else.

Wow! This blog is exactly what I needed to stop in and read!! I just blogged not 5 minutes ago about how I am always sick!! I thougth maybe I’m dying of parasites invading my body or something. When come to find out, I don’t regularly take my multi vitamin, and I stress myself out at work, not to mention stress myself out thinking I’m dying when I’m sick ;)
I saw you posted about Louise L. Hay, I recently read that book as well, what an inspiration! I second that it’s a must read!!
Again, thank you so much for your blog, and I hope all is well!

    Hi Alicia,
Thank you. :-) Louise Hay is simply an amazing woman. There is soooo much I learned from her. For some time I used to listen to her audio tapes non-stop. Her voice is also soo soothing.
I am learning a lot more about the mind body connection. In future posts I am going to write down my experiments about body pains and aches and how they are related to our mind. Also I will write about how I intended to gain weight because a lot of people around me, my family and friends, were over weight and were quite depressed about it, and was able to gain quite a few inches around my midsection and my experiences with that.
It’s quite easy for me to get better these days even if I do get sick by just changing the way I’m feeling, what I’m focusing upon etc.
Until I totally learn to control that, we still have multi-vitamins! :-)
I wanted to check out your blog but you didn’t leave a link.

I almost never get sick, and when I do, it’s so minimal that it has no effect on my life. I have never called in sick at work. The last time I was sick enough to sleep or stay home was more than ten years ago. Maybe I am lucky, but maybe it also has to do with my attitude. I don’t eat perfect, I drink, I don’t worry about germs or bacteria (it’s pointless), don’t care about organic crap, raw meat, I don’t care if people around me are sick, I kiss my GF when she’s sick. I work out very, very hard, I eat all types of food, try to get enough sleep, and just try to stay happy. When I get sick, my mental state is, so F’ing what? I’m going to go to work, go to the gym, go to parties, and keep doing the same thing. The virus will just have to deal with it. My nose runs, my throat is a little sore. That’s it. Minor nuisance. I think this happens because I don’t freak out when I feel myself getting sick. It’s mental. My body knows what is going to happen. It knows it gets no break. It’s trained. Yes maybe I have good genetics and am a bit lucky, sure. But I think the mental thing plays a part too. A big part. Try it. Next time you feel yourself getting sick, tell your body “FU. I’m not going to feel sick. I’m an animal. Get used to it.” Your body and mind will get better at it each time. Of course this depends on you being healthy in the first place, active, eat ok, etc…

  9. Ricky Says:

That’s awesome Tyler! It seems like it’s your positive mental attitude along with your regular work outs that might be responsible for keeping you healthy.
Your approach of telling your body that you’re not going to get sick no matter what definitely works. Assuming it’s not a serious/critical illness etc of course.
When I was going to India I had a severe fever but I couldn’t change my flight because of penalty + I had limited number of holidays, so that’s what I ended up doing. I told myself that it was too bad but nothing I could do and no matter what I was going to get on that plane. When I landed in India I was still sick but I kept on going with my plan as I had no time to waste and slowly my fever vanished and I totally forgot there was something wrong with me.
Here we have the luxury of taking a day off whenever we get sick, so if it was under different circumstances I might have taken a few days off of work and just relaxed.

  10. tyler Says:

Thanks Ricky. Glad you agree. I was half expecting somebody to say “what a jerk!” LOL Yeah, your body definitely responds to what you throw at it. It wants to be the best at what YOU do. You lift weights, you body learns it must get better at that. Work weird hours, you will adjust. You stick to your normal schedule when sick, your body will adjust. Some goes for bad things. Then like you said, you get to spend your paid-time-off doing something fun.

Funnily enough, I have a sore throat today. I think from sleeping with the fan on and window open. Still feel great. Going to the gym in 30 minutes. Going to have a martini when I get home. So yeah, people, control your body with your mind. Train it.

  11. Ricky Says:

You’ve got to be joking! Jerk? Oh no, I think it is quite inspiring how you’re able to motivate yourself to keep going despite feeling sick.
You’re so right. Human body is amazing at adapting to different circumstances and environments.
When I was younger I would work at whatever job I could get and my body would adapt accordingly. Sometimes I would be working nights, and sometimes up to 16 hours a day, sometimes fixing cars in a garage, sometimes painting exterior of a building sitting on top of a truck at mid afternoon in extreme heat!
hmm.. can’t believe the kind of jobs I’ve done. :-)
But every single time, after a little while my body would adapt to it and I would be fine.
Most people I know have a protein shake after workouts. I think you’re the only one having a martini after a workout! :-)
Maybe that’s the secret to not getting sick?
