How news influences our thoughts

Friday, September 5th, 2008

I have always tried to stay away from listening to news. Have you ever thought about how news influences our thoughts? No good has ever come from listening to news. People would argue that we need to listen to the news in order to keep up with the happenings in the world. But I disagree.

News is full of negativity. If it’s something really important then I usually hear it from my friends and colleagues anyways. In the morning I usually go to the weather channel just to check the weather before going to work. In the time I am bombarded with plenty of news. And it’s nothing more than, a person murdered here, a woman raped there, robbery, terrorism and so on.

Well lately there have been a few deaths due to contamination of certain meat products here in Toronto. Now they figured some cheese products might also be contaminated.

I usually pride myself with not listening to the news and always trying to stay positive and not letting negative events and circumstances affect me. Well I was in for a surprise. :-) I went to an Oriental restaurant and had one of my favourite dishes, spicy beef noodle soup! I just had a little bit and then I started to feel sick. And over night I got fever and sore throat and by this morning the fever had gone quite high. I was unable to stand for more than a few seconds before having to rest.

I am ashamed to say but my first thoughts were that I had eaten some of that contaminated meat and I might die as well! Now I’ve gotten sick before but always thought that I was just sick and nothing more but now due to the influence of the news and people talking every where about this meat contamination, I also thought that I might be infected with the same thing. :-(

But I realized that I wasn’t throwing up or was not experiencing any of the symptoms shown by people who had eaten the contaminated meat. Phew!

Well, I am feeling much better now but it was a wonderful lesson for me. How the news can slowly creep into the minds and work its wonder, how news influences our thoughts! Amazing!
