How news influences our thoughts
I have always tried to stay away from listening to news. Have you ever thought about how news influences our thoughts? No good has ever come from listening to news. People would argue that we need to listen to the news in order to keep up with the happenings in the world. But I disagree.
News is full of negativity. If it’s something really important then I usually hear it from my friends and colleagues anyways. In the morning I usually go to the weather channel just to check the weather before going to work. In the time I am bombarded with plenty of news. And it’s nothing more than, a person murdered here, a woman raped there, robbery, terrorism and so on.
Well lately there have been a few deaths due to contamination of certain meat products here in Toronto. Now they figured some cheese products might also be contaminated.
I usually pride myself with not listening to the news and always trying to stay positive and not letting negative events and circumstances affect me. Well I was in for a surprise.
I went to an Oriental restaurant and had one of my favourite dishes, spicy beef noodle soup! I just had a little bit and then I started to feel sick. And over night I got fever and sore throat and by this morning the fever had gone quite high. I was unable to stand for more than a few seconds before having to rest.
I am ashamed to say but my first thoughts were that I had eaten some of that contaminated meat and I might die as well! Now I’ve gotten sick before but always thought that I was just sick and nothing more but now due to the influence of the news and people talking every where about this meat contamination, I also thought that I might be infected with the same thing.
But I realized that I wasn’t throwing up or was not experiencing any of the symptoms shown by people who had eaten the contaminated meat. Phew!
Well, I am feeling much better now but it was a wonderful lesson for me. How the news can slowly creep into the minds and work its wonder, how news influences our thoughts! Amazing!

the media plays an enormous role in shaping the way we think. it’s actually quite depressing to realize how we are controlled through the media.

Definitely. I was just dumbfounded by my experience. First thing my mind thought was the worst when I got sick. Which was due 100% to the influence of media. And all this even though I don’t watch news much.

I couldn’t agree more. I have long noticed how you start your day is important – if you listen to the news first thing, the day seems to be dull but if you start with maybe uplifting music or perhaps some affirmations it feels entirely different.
It is amazing how what we put into our minds makes a huge difference.
It has also struck me how we are only listening to a second hand account of what happens and all too often it is edited to increase the drama. A friend of mine gave up being a journalist as he was never allowed to tell the truth.
Someone once said ‘if it is bad enough, someone will tell me’. In the meantime, Keep away from the news.

Hey Keith,
Similar thing happened to a journalist friend of mine as well. I’m so glad that they had enough courage to leave their good paying jobs to be true to themselves.
I had given up news a long time ago. In the mornings I was just watching traffic and weather news but I realized that with in that short span of time, just waiting for weather or traffic, a lot of negative news still ended up in my mind. So, now if I need to watch that I mute the t.v.

Incredibly I have found even the weather reports can be negative! A report on TV (I saw it at my parents home) contained a dramatic ‘weather warning’. Why? It was going to rain and we had to be careful driving.
It rains regularly so why the big panic? Ah, it makes it more interesting. Good grief.
I have seen grown men AFRAID of the rain. Is it any wonder?
I now get my weather reports from certain websites that give only the bald facts – or just enjoy the suprises the weather brings!

I’ve got people at my office literally fuming because of the weather changes, constantly complaining. Some ask for only one season but I absolutely love every season we have. There’s tons of stuff to do in every season.
But you’re absolutely right about weather reports being negative. It’s all in how it’s presented by media. These days are still a little chillier than normal. So, every single day you hear on tv about how bad this weather is for plants! There’s always something to complain about if we go around looking for it.
I’ve tried getting weather reports via internet as well sometimes but it’s not every day.
Thanks for the reminder. No more turning the tv on in the mornings!

@Keith, it’s so true about being scared of the weather. It is nuts how our emotions are controlled by weather reports!!!
